This is a re-advertisement of the position as Professor of Museology at the Department of Art History, Aesthetics and Culture and Museology at Aarhus University.

The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 01/01/2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The position is located at the Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology. There is close collaboration across aesthetic disciplines and study programmes in the department, including the Bachelor’s supplementary subject in museology: curating and cultural heritage, and the professional Master in Curating. The department also houses the research programme in museology.

We are looking for an applicant who can consolidate and develop the department’s museological research tradition and teaching environment and play a leading role in (for instance) the research programme for museology and the Centre for Museology. We ask applicants to present in their application how they intend to imbed and develop their competences and ideas in the department and what their ambitions are for museology at Aarhus University.

We are looking for an innovative and dedicated researcher with a strong academic record of accomplishment who will deliver research of the highest international standard, pursue research funding from external funding bodies, and contribute to teaching and supervising students on all degree levels. The professor in museology is expected to take a leading role in managing and developing the department’s research and educational activities, as well as in collaborating nationally and internationally with a range of external partners. We prioritise applicants who will engage in the cross disciplinary research and teaching environment that characterises museology at Aarhus University.

Research
The Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant national and international profile and a robust research network, especially within the Nordic countries. The department’s museological research and research activities are primarily organised around the research programme in museology; please see the programme’s homepage for further information.

The successful applicant will be expected to take a leading role in developing research in the field of museology, as well as publishing original peer-reviewed research at the highest international level and making significant scholarly contributions to theoretical and thematic developments within the field.

The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the field of museology and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, and in connection with external research funding. To that end, the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate research leadership as well as taking the lead in applying for international research funding and developing international research networks.

Teaching and supervision
We are looking for applicants who have solid experience of teaching and supervision at university level as well as course, curriculum and degree programme development in the field of museology.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and to teach and supervise on the department’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes, particularly in the BA supplementary subject in museology: curating and cultural heritage as well as related courses in the department’s other BA and MA degree programmes such as the BA and MA in art history and the professional Master in Curating. Please indicate in your application which courses you could teach.

The successful applicant will be expected to apply innovative teaching methods, and to be the driving force in the ongoing development of degree programmes within the field of museology. In this connection, experience of degree programme development at universities or similar institutions will be an advantage. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in English as well as Danish.

Talent development
We are looking for applicants who have experience of supervising students at both BA and MA levels as well as supervising and helping to develop the careers of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdocs and assistant professors). The successful applicant will be expected to perform all these tasks, as well as recruiting and supervising PhD students and participating in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in terms of research collaboration with private companies, government consultancy, collaboration with civil society, and the public dissemination of knowledge. The successful applicant is also expected to take part in public debates in areas related to the position.

The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.
Qualifications

Applicants must document a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to museology as well as teaching and research experience commensurate with that attained through an associate professorship.

Applicants must document, relevant to the position:
- a record of original peer-reviewed articles and monographs at an international level which have contributed to developments within museology
- a record of accomplishment with regard to research management and the attraction of external research funding
- experience of participation in international research collaboration
- participation in both national and international research networks
- extensive, relevant teaching and supervision competences and experience at BA, MA and PhD level as well as experience of curriculum development
- extensive competences in and experience of supervision and the career development of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and/or assistant professors) and preferably the development of PhD courses
- a significant record of accomplishment with regard to knowledge exchange

Finally, applicants are asked to provide a research plan for the next three years, as well as stating how they see themselves and the department contributing to future research developments within the field.
