CLOSING EVENT / SYMPOSIUM
On January 13, Extra City invites an interesting cast of guests, to reflect on its current exhibition "1:1". The evening is organized as the closing event of the exhibition. It will start with a guided tour by Wouter Davidts (Professor of Modern Art History, VU University Amsterdam) and Wouter van Besien (Groen! party leader), followed by a series of lectures by Gideon Boie (architecture activist, member of BAVO), Sven Lütticken (art historian and critic), Bart Verschaffel (Professor of Architecture Theory, Ghent University) and Marina Vishmidt (researcher and writer) and a public discussion. Artistic director Mihnea Mircan will moderate the evening.

The speakers will engage the two artistic practices from a variety of perspectives, ranging from a reflection on the monument as a philosophical notion, to a recent history of prison architecture and the relationships between this microcosm of exclusion and the larger social body from which it is separated, or to the ways in which the two artists negotiate the distinction between politics and the political.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition "1:1 introduced two remarkable artistic practices concerned with the dilemmas of public art in The Netherlands and beyond. Although belonging to different generations, and conceiving the political responsibility of the artist in distinct ways, the practices of Hans van Houwelingen and Jonas Staal are connected by a sustained polemic within the genre of monumental art, unravelling the political desires and anxieties that monuments thread together and ‘set in stone’, reopening the debates about recent history that monuments seek to terminate.

The artists engage the question of the monument overtly – without recourse to the negative prefix and ironic foil of an ‘anti-’, or ‘counter-monument’ – in a critical scrutiny of paradigms of consensus, modes of commemoration and their political instrumentality.
