The Lawley Lecture Theatre, Kingston Hill Campus, Kingston University,
Kingston Hill, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey.

Increasing interest in the subject of shopping for goods with which to
create the domestic interior and through which a modern identity was
created provides the starting point for this conference. The papers will
address the themes of shopping and class formation, shopping and
gender, shop display, the development of the department store, retail
interiors and the expansion of the local high street in Europe and the
USA and it is hoped that the occasion will facilitate contacts and further
research in this field.

It is a two day conference on the subject of shopping for goods with
which to create the domestic interior and through which a modern
identity is expressed.

The programme will include papers from Penny Sparke, Pat Kirkham,
Serge Jaumain, Clive Edwards, Deborah Ryan, Lesley Whitworth,
Anthony Parsons, Trevor Keeble, Bronwen Edwards and Jo Lintonbon.
Keynote speaker to be announced.

Papers will address the themes of shopping and class formation,
shopping and gender, shop display and shopping by mail order; the
development of department store, retail interiors and the expansion of
the local high street.

The programme will also include a tour of Dorich House.
