LACMA and the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles present the symposium:

HERE AND THERE: Artistic exchange between Germany and California in the 1960s and 70s

The multifaceted focus of the Pacific Standard Time projects and events in 2011-2012 offer different recollections, revelations and re-interpretations of art developments in Southern California in the postwar era. One aspect that has not been regarded so far is the exchange between artists, gallery dealers and curators between Germany and Southern California.
The symposium will look in both directions (to Germany and to Southern California), discussing the artistic exchange, as well as the dissemination of art from California in (West-)Germany. HERE AND THERE introduces mechanisms of artistic exchange in the 1960s and 70s and offers a possibility for new exchange and dialogue.

During the symposium, the video montage “HERE AND THERE: California Artists in Germany during the 1970s” will be screened for the first time. Featuring interviews with the artists Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Joe Goode, Richard Jackson, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, David Lamelas, and Ed Ruscha, the video highlights a wide range of experiences and networks of artists from California in Germany.
