Opening remarks: David R. Jones (Community Service Society)

Panel 1: Historical perspectives on social work.

· On Progressive-era campaigns for social welfare, the tensions and common ground among different human service organizations, and the multiple strains of social work in the 20th century.

· Moderated by Barbara Simon (Columbia School of Social Work) and featuring Gertrude Goldberg (Adelphi School of Social Work); Michael Reisch (Maryland); Ethan Sribnick (Institute for Children, Poverty, & Homelessness); and Daniel Walkowitz (NYU).

Panel 2: On community activism and media

· On how charity and welfare organizations since the progressive era have used various media (photography, lantern slides, film, journals, newspapers, etc.) to engage members of the community to take personal and political action.

· Moderated by Elizabeth Hutchinson (Columbia; Barnard); and featuring Susie Linfield (NYU); Maren Stange (Cooper Union); Terri Weissman (Illinois)

Keynote: Michael Katz (University of Pennsylvania)

· "From Underclass to Entrepreneur: New Technologies of Poverty Work in Urban America," from his new book /Why Don't American Cities Burn?/ (Pennsylvania)
