Department of Arts and Cultural Studies (IKK), University of Copenhagen, 16.09.–02.10.2019
Bewerbungsschluss: 02.10.2019

Pernille Søfeldt Kirk

One of the Nordic region’s leading art and cultural science faculties is seeking a new head of department.

Antigone, zombie films, Schubert, Michael Jackson, Titian, Japanese manga, Shakespeare, musicals. The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies offer a global vision, blue sky thinking and research and teaching in an impressive range of cultural products. Your job as head of department will be to embrace, inspire and lead – and to further develop this already well-functioning organisation so that the many academic disciplines work together effectively.

The department provides a stimulating environment for international research and education from BA to PhD level in art history, comparative literature studies, modern culture and cultural communication, musicology, theatre and performance studies and visual culture.

Your role and task

The department's degree programmes attract a great number of students and have a high profile in society in general. As head of department, your task will be to ensure the continued success of the department, with its highly sought-after degree programmes and reputation for academic excellence, and, at the same time, to prepare students for the culture and education sectors where they will typically be employed after graduating.

The department's research base is in a period of rapid expansion. Traditional academic disciplines are combining in order to tackle the issues and problems facing society today, and researchers are collaborating in several major cross-disciplinary research projects that are attracting considerable interest in the form of funding from private and public donors. We would expect you to support this trend.

You are a skilled personnel manager, you are creative, able to motivate people, and possess the ability to work systematically with all stakeholders in the Danish research and education sector. You display political awareness when interacting with public and private funders and in the arena of public debate, and you can demonstrate the department's relevance and impact in society.

You are good at strategic planning, as an important task will be to implement the department's Strategy 2023 within the framework of the University of Copenhagen's overall strategy plan: "Talent and Collaboration".

We are seeking a visionary and pragmatic leader and expect you to have relevant management experience, including experience with personnel and research management, as well as with controlling budgets. We also expect you to be ambitious in developing the department's study and work environment. You have a conscious and qualified approach to management as a discipline and to your own management practice.

Qualifications and skills

You have a PhD degree or equivalent qualification and you are a recognised researcher at associate professor or professor level in one of the department’s disciplines - preferably with some international experience.

We prefer if you have experience with teaching at university level, with publishing research, with obtaining external funding and with overall financial management. It will also be an advantage if you know about the employer groups for the department’s graduates and have an understanding of how to create links and networks in both managerial and political terms, as well as with companies and public institutions.
