This PhD studentship will contribute to a research project funded by an Irish Research Council Advanced Laureate Award and directed by Professor Christine Casey. CRAFTVALUE is a project dedicated to a skills-based analysis of architecture in Britain and Ireland in the period 1680-1780. Focused on the agency and impact of craftsmanship in early modern architecture, it will explore the interface between design and making across a range of media, analyse the reception of craftsmanship in the period and beyond, and document the achievement, maintenance and assessment of craft skills in early modern Britain and Ireland.

The doctoral student will focus upon the German context for the works of two designers of German origin who migrated to Britain in the early eighteenth century and who were closely associated with migrant craftsmen: Richard Castle who was active in Ireland (1728-50), and John (Johann) Borlach, draughtsman to the Scottish architect James Gibbs (1682-1754). The student will explore archival evidence for links between Germany and Britain in the period, will contextualise the training of draughtsmen and surveyors in Germany, and will analyse the relationship of craftsmanship and architectural design. The student will engage in primary and secondary research in Germany, conduct site visits, and participate in project conferences and activities. The post will also involve promotion of the project aims through digital media. The candidate will work under the supervision of the project PI, Professor Christine Casey.
