CALL FOR PAPERS: ESPACIO, TIEMPO Y FORMA. SERIE VII. HISTORIA DEL ARTE (SPACE, TIME AND FORM. SERIES VII. HISTORY OF ART)

2013 – ISSUE N.1 AND “CÓMPLICES NECESARIOS” (NECESARY ACCOMPLICES) ISSUE

Founded 25 years ago, Espacio Tiempo y Forma. Serie VII. Historia del Arte now enters a new era. From 2013, the journal is published online and in print; its layout, cover, numbering, and assessment criteria for academic quality have been renewed with the aim of increasing the journal’s impact. The new phase begins with the journal’s incorporation to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) and the launch of an annual themed issue edited by leading scholars in the field. The themed issue will consist of two articles by guest authors and is open to submissions of original and outstanding work that will be subject to (double-blind) peer review. In addition to the themed issue, all journal issues will include a collection of articles on various subjects. Manuscripts are considered for review and possible publication for both the themed and the journal issue.
Please note that the review process proposed by Espacio, Tiempo y Forma. Serie VII. Historia del Arte is not intended as a mere screening of manuscripts but as a constructive evaluation that will contribute to further improving the published papers.

We invite all members of the academic community to submit original manuscripts for the first issue of Espacio, Tiempo y Forma. Serie VII. Historia del Arte, Nueva Época. Submissions are welcome for both the collection of articles and the themed issue.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2013.

THEMED ISSUE "NECESSARY ACCOMPLICES"

“Necessary Accomplices” is the title of the themed volume that will accompany the first issue of the journal as it enters a new era. It will be guest-edited by Carlos Reyero Hermosilla, Professor of History of Art at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, who has proposed the following thematic framework for the issue:
The work of art is the result of an organic process in which various agents are involved. The material executor of the work and its promoters, intellectual or financial, tend to be granted a central role that has concealed the involvement of other agents. In identifying them as necessary accomplices, we intend to draw attention to the shared agency exerted by those who were present in different ways: in the formal and semantic alteration of the work of art before it reached the person for whom it was made, the scholar, or the mere observer. Their participation -voluntary, imposed or unexpected- has been key in the historical and aesthetic appreciation of art.
We are interested, firstly, in the actors that dictated, guided or censured the form, subject or meaning of a work of art during the creative process: individuals in contact with the artist or promoter, mentors, friends, teachers, scholars, critics, judges, Episcopal visitors, heads of protocol, politicians, or authorities of any nature.
Secondly, we look at the intellectual and material role played by the individuals who intervened in the work of art once it was completed, cutting into its surface, partially destroying or concealing it, through additions, fragmentations or alterations of any sort. Also of interest is how chance events and the passing of time have acted as participatory agents.
Thirdly, we explore the agents responsible for the changes in meaning of the art work in relation to critical, functional, touristic, museum, curatorial or historiographic discourses. The original work of art is altered as it is presented in a different context, either due to a change in location, its relation to other works, or the use of copies and reproductions.

Please circulate this Call for Papers widely. Once you have registered and consulted the Instructions for Authors, submit your proposal on our online journal platform:
