Lawrence Alloway Reconsidered

Manton Studio, Tate Britain
Wednesday 30 March 2011, 10am - 6pm

The career of critic and curator Lawrence Alloway (1926–1990) is marked by his investment in several key aspects in twentieth-century art, including earthworks, feminism, film criticism, pop art and theories of visual culture.

Organised by Dr Courtney J. Martin and Tate Research in collaboration with The Getty Research Institute, this conference explores the various dimensions of Alloway's work (art criticism, art historical texts, exhibitions, and lectures). Bringing together scholars from England and America, the conference looks at the different contexts of Alloway's writings and cultural investigations, his working relationships with artists (such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns), and his involvement with particular institutions, notably the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and the Guggenheim in New York.

Speakers at 'Lawrence Alloway Reconsidered' include:

Richard Leslie: 'Lawrence Alloway's Parataxis'

Anne Massey: 'Farther Than Pop: Lawrence Alloway and the Independent Group'
