Art Magazines and Magazine Art

This session takes its title from a pioneering article published by Clive Phillpot in Artforum in 1980. ‘By magazine art’, he wrote, ‘I mean art which is realized only when the magazine has been composed and printed.’ In the 35 years that have since passed, the related field of the study of book art, for example, alongside the rise of periodical studies, have produced much valuable work. Yet the category magazine art, with a few notable exceptions, has gone largely unaddressed by art history despite its relative prevalence as part of contemporary artistic practice.

This session seeks both to question and to redress this imbalance. Phillpot saw artists working in this area in the 1960s and 1970s as consciously using the production of a magazine to question the nature of artworks, making art specifically for circulation through this mass-communications medium. Analogously, this session seeks papers that work to re-establish, but more importantly to theorize, the category magazine art; is Phillpot’s framework still valid and applicable or are there now more productive ways of considering such material?

Proposals are encouraged which focus on artworks that foreground the specific materiality of the magazine, and that investigate its distinct potential as a means of dissemination. Contributions are welcomed which address magazine art from any geographical context, published at any point between the 1960s and the present day, and that look to position such material within the ambitions of current art-historical practice.

Proposals of no more than 250 words should be sent to the session convenor, Samuel Bibby (samuelaah.org.uk), by Monday 9th November 2015.
