VU University Amsterdam is opening up a tenure-track position starting on the level of Associate Professorship (0,8fte) with the possibility to become a Full Professor.

The Faculty of Humanities at VU University Amsterdam, located in Amsterdam’s burgeoning Zuidas district, is a dynamic faculty with expertise in the areas of language, communication, art, culture and history. The teaching we provide in our degree programmes covers the full breadth of the disciplines involved while offering unique opportunities for truly in-depth, focussed study. Our research is firmly embedded in the university’s various interfaculty research institutes. In addition, the faculty is a real innovator in the field of social entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer.

The Faculty has three departments. The tenure-track position in Design Cultures will be hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture, History and Ancient Studies. Arts & Culture is responsible for the broad Bachelor’s programme in Media, Art, Design and Architecture (MKDA) as well as three Master’s programmes:
- Visual Arts, Media and Architecture (VAMA; Research Master’s);
- Arts and Culture (specializations: Design Cultures, Art History, History of Architecture, Comparative Arts and Media Studies);
- Heritage

Job description
The Associate Professor will develop innovative policies aimed at defining the profile of Design Cultures within Arts and Culture, and at giving an impulse to the international character of the Department’s teaching and research programmes. He or she will be an initiator in educational reform projects for the faculty’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.

Requirements
The candidate:
• has a PhD in a field related to Design Cultures;
• has an excellent reputation in research, as evidenced by a substantial list of publications in internationally recognized journals;
• is a committed lecturer who provides inspiring teaching (positive teaching evaluations);
• has an excellent knowledge of the international developments in the field of Design Studies and is able to relate these to one or more of the other disciplines in Arts & Culture at the VU;
• has a thorough grounding in methodology, combined with an open attitude toward the professional field of Design Studies;
• has an international orientation, as evidenced by participation in international research projects and research networks;
• is focused on interdisciplinarity and is fully committed to working closely with the other chairs in Arts and Culture, the Faculty and throughout the university;
• maintains good contacts with museums, institutions, and other relevant market segments in the Netherlands and abroad;
• has proven experience with administrative tasks and is an inspiring leader;
• has a solid track record in acquiring external funding from indirect and contract sources;
• has experience in supervising PhD students.

Other relevant details
The selection process will entail interviews and a trial lecture and/or an assessment. The employment contract will have a total duration of four years and may be followed by a permanent employment contract as Associate Professor or Full Professor. Salary

The starting salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel with a minimum of €4607,- (salary scale 13) and a maximum € 6160,- gross per month (salary scale 14) based on a fulltime employment.
