"Impressionism and the Art Market: Paul Durand-Ruel"

This two-day event, organised by the National Gallery and the Institut Français du Royaume-Uni, accompanies the exhibition ‘Inventing Impressionism’, centred around Paul Durand-Ruel, the forward-thinking Parisian art dealer who discovered and supported the Impressionists, creating a market for their work in France and abroad, and inventing the profession of the modern art dealer. Research undertaken in preparation for the exhibition has led to new insights into and lent greater nuance to existing understandings of the relationship between Impressionism and the art market during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This series of talks and conversations will address various aspects of Paul Durand-Ruel’s practice and achievements and consider the new discoveries made in relation to the exhibition.

Friday 24 April: Institut Français, 17 Queensberry Place, London SW7 2DT
